Short answer

Choose companies where your strongest pattern of value matches a visible business need—not simply brands you admire.

A target-company list should make a senior-level search more precise. Too often, it becomes a collection of familiar brands, companies with open roles, or employers that look impressive from the outside. A stronger list begins with the business problems you solve and identifies where those problems are important enough to create demand for your experience.

Start with your repeatable value

Review the situations where your leadership produced the clearest business consequence. Perhaps you revived a declining portfolio, expanded a retailer relationship, built an innovation pipeline, scaled an emerging brand, or aligned a fragmented commercial team.

Name the pattern underneath the accomplishment. The goal is not to list everything you have done. It is to identify the work a company would have a meaningful reason to hire you to do again.

Find companies with the corresponding need

Use earnings calls, leadership changes, trade coverage, retailer activity, portfolio moves, and company announcements to look for evidence. A legacy brand losing share, a natural brand entering conventional retail, or a business rebuilding customer strategy may each point to a different leadership need.

Research before assuming. A company can be attractive and still offer little reason for your particular experience to matter now.

Choose depth over volume

A focused list of five to ten companies lets you understand the business, map relevant leaders, identify second-level relationships, and contribute a thoughtful point of view. A list of fifty usually forces generic outreach.

Treat the list as a hypothesis. Conversations may confirm the fit, reveal a different problem, or show that another company belongs on the list instead. Precision should improve as the market teaches you more.
