If your job search has taken longer than you expected, I want to start with this:
➡️ You’re not alone. You’re not failing. You’re not behind.
I work with talented, experienced professionals every day — people who are highly capable — and many of them have faced long job searches for reasons outside their control.
It’s easy to think something is wrong with you when you see others landing roles quickly. But there are so many factors in play — market timing, organizational changes, hidden opportunities — that have nothing to do with your worth.
Still, when the search stretches on, it’s discouraging. So let’s talk about how to reset, refocus, and move forward when your job search is taking longer than you hoped.
Long job searches are exhausting.
It’s okay to feel frustrated, discouraged, and tired of hearing "we went in a different direction."
But here’s the thing: you don’t have to push those feelings aside. Acknowledge them. Then remind yourself:
➡️ “This is a season — not forever.”
Sometimes the best first step is simply giving yourself permission to feel what you’re feeling — and then decide what you’ll do next.
When you’ve been searching for a while, it’s easy to keep doing the same things without realizing they may not be working.
Take a moment to reflect:
✔️ Are you only applying online and not getting responses?
✔️ Are you relying on cold applications and skipping networking?
✔️ Are you sharing a story in interviews that isn’t landing with employers?
Sometimes small adjustments — to your resume, your story, or your approach — can make a big difference.
If you’re not sure where to start, ask yourself:
➡️ “What would I tell a friend if they were in my shoes?” (We’re often kinder and clearer when giving others advice!)
When you’re feeling desperate for a role, it’s tempting to hide behind job boards and submit as many applications as possible.
But most job seekers I work with land roles through conversations — not cold applications.
If you’ve been stuck applying and waiting, shift your focus to people:
People hire people. Not resumes.
Job searching is mentally and emotionally draining.
And if you’re burned out, it’s even harder to show up confidently.
Here are small ways to take care of yourself during the process:
You cannot job search 24/7 — and you don’t need to.
Just because you haven’t landed the right role yet doesn’t mean you don’t have value.
Write out:
Keep this list handy. Review it when rejection hits.
Your worth isn’t defined by how fast you land a role.
1️⃣ Reach out to one person you’ve lost touch with and start a conversation.
2️⃣ Review your job search approach and identify one thing to adjust (resume, story, networking focus).
3️⃣ Celebrate one small win — even if it’s just taking action today.
If you’ve been searching longer than expected, please hear this:
➡️ You are not behind. You are in process.
Small adjustments, real conversations, and taking care of yourself will move you forward.
